Dolly Parton, a cherished icon in the music industry, has not always had a smooth journey to success. In 1984, she faced a deeply challenging period where she contemplated ending her own life. It was through the support of her friends that she managed to overcome the depression that weighed heavily on her.
Here’s what Dolly revealed about that difficult chapter of her life and how she found her way back to hope and resilience.
Dolly Parton Nearly Reached a Breaking Point in 1984
Dolly Parton launched her career with her debut album, Hello, I’m Dolly, in 1967, which featured her first number-one hit, “Dumb Blonde.” Over the years, she delivered iconic tracks such as “9 to 5,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “Jolene,” paving the way for a legendary career that has surpassed 100 million album sales worldwide.
In 1984, Dolly Parton faced significant health challenges. Despite her doctor’s advice to rest while battling severe stomach issues, she continued performing. During a concert in Indianapolis, she collapsed on stage. It was later revealed that she had internal bleeding and was diagnosed with endometriosis, a condition that required immediate attention.
Endometriosis occurs when tissue resembling the lining of the uterus grows outside its normal location, often affecting areas like the fallopian tubes and ovaries. To address this condition and prevent life-threatening internal bleeding, Dolly Parton required two surgeries. At 36 years old, she underwent a partial hysterectomy, a procedure that ended her ability to conceive children naturally.
“I was pushing myself too hard while secretly dealing with a mountain of personal and emotional issues,” Dolly shared (via The Express). “Everything came crashing down at once—stomach issues, female health concerns, and overall physical problems.”
Dolly Parton’s Rising Success Took a Toll on Her Well-Being
While one might expect that achieving greater success would lift Dolly Parton out of her depression, it had the opposite effect, exacerbating her emotional struggles. Following her chart-topping hit “9 to 5” and her role in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Dolly’s personal challenges only intensified.
“I was completely out of control,” Dolly confessed. “I neglected my health, disregarded proper nutrition, and let everything fall apart. Every single day, I wrestled with the thought, ‘If only I had the courage to end it all.’ Suddenly, I realized I was a middle-aged woman facing a crisis. It was a dark, difficult time, but I eventually forced myself to rise above it.”
Dolly candidly shared that she would consume three pizzas in one sitting, followed by cravings for McDonald’s fries. Her unchecked habits caused her to gain 50 pounds. She compared her compulsive overeating to addiction, akin to substance abuse, and admitted her body eventually reached its limit. This wake-up call motivated her to embrace a healthier lifestyle, introducing a structured diet and fitness regimen that ultimately saved her life.
